The ReCYCLEry

Welcome to the online home of the ReCYCLEry

The ReCYCLEry thrives solely through the voluntary effort of giving, determined individuals and our community at large. With the assistance of SURGE, we initiated and maintain the Blue Urban Bikes program and we welcome any and all volunteers, bike mechanics or not, to fulfill our mission, and now that fuel prices and the economy at large is totally unpredictable if not in dire straits, demand is growing quickly. Please attend our workshops or contact us if you wish to contribute.

Located in Carrboro, NC, The ReCYCLEry is a not-for-profit organization that provides a creative workspace to connect salvaged bikes with active community members, creates opportunities for skill building and volunteerism, and seeks to increase the use of the bicycle for both transportation and recreation.

Give Thanks! Mon. Nov. 24th Mobile Repair Day at UNC's Pit

3-6:30pm Last Minute Mobile Repair Day and Informational Session

Join the ReCYCLEry on Facebook for regular announcements such as this Mobile Repair Day!

ReCYCLEry members and volunteers will gather Monday and pack a mini shop onto bike trailers and ride to the Pit on the University of North Carolina Campus. The idea is to reinforce mechanic skills learned at ReCYCLEry, showcase the utilitarian aspect of the bicycle, realize we haven't stopped having fun on bikes (though we may also possess a driver's license), and reach out to the university students who are such a large part of our local bicycle riding population.

Volunteers should meet at ReCYCLEry between 1:00pm as we load trailers. We will ride together at 1:30pm to campus to turn wrenches and promote the ReCYCLEry's programs and community services. Wear your helmet and bring drinking water.

Bike Karma... Sat. Nov. 15th ReCYCLEry Bike Drive at Performance Bikes

Do you have a bicycle to donate to the ReCYCLEry? Do your neighbors have bikes lying around, unused and deteriorating? If so, come on out to the ReCYCLEry Bike Drive on Saturday, November 15th, and bring them all!

Performance Bikes has generously offered to host the Bike Drive at their convenient downtown Carrboro location, 404 East Main Street next to the Arts Center. We're going to be there from 11am-3pm rain or shine and if you donate a bike you will get a 10% discount to Performance for the day!

Fall Mobile Repair Days

Sat. Nov. 1st, 2008: IFC Homestart Program on Homestead Rd

Sat. Nov. 8th, 2008: Karen Burmese Refugees at Kingswood Apts

ReCYCLEry members and volunteers will gather on several saturdays this fall and pack a mini shop onto bike trailers and ride to under-served neighborhoods to work with kids on their bikes. The idea is to reinforce mechanic skills learned at ReCYCLEry, showcase the utilitarian aspect of the bicycle, realize we haven't stopped having fun on bikes (though we may also possess a driver's license), and reach out to kids who may be geographically isolated from ReCYCLEry.

Volunteers should meet at ReCYCLEry between 9-9:30am as we load trailers. We then ride together to a local neighborhood to turn wrenches with the larger community. Wear your helmet and bring drinking water.

As with our other programs, all activities are weather dependent. Upcoming dates:

Bike rental program talks continue (DTH)

Three bicycle-renting stations might be set up on campus as early as the end of the semester, UNC officials said.

The ReCYCLEry, a local organization devoted to providing a reliable source of clean and affordable transportation for the community, began negotiations last year with UNC’s Department of Public Safety. Although the talks broke down last year, efforts have recently started again.

ReCYCLEry maintains Blue Urban Bikes, which already has 10 designated hubs in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. For a $10 annual membership, bicycles can be rented for 24 hours at no extra cost.

ReCYCLEry at the Carrboro Music Festival!

On sunday, September 28th, there were 24 different venues across the town of Carrboro featuring free music. It was a spectacular day of music and community!

We must sincerely thank Southern Rail and the Station who generously offered to donate proceeds from their beer sales to benefit the ReCYCLEry. Some of the best performances of the day included shows on their three stages.

We would like to encourage everyone to stop by and give our great appreciation to the great folks at Southern Rail and the Station for this, and for generously hosting our upcoming eighth anniversary Celebration!

You can tour Southern Rail virtually online at www.sr-nc.com and you can check out the Carrboro Music Festival schedule and venue map at carrboromusicfestival.com.

Nine BUB Hubs and Growing!

We are proud to present two new Blue Urban Bike hubs, and are working on quite a few more. Read more about the award winning BUB program's latest news, featuring details on Hub plans and our recent award.

You can now check out Blue Bikes from Johnny's Sporting Goods in Carrboro and from the USAT hub located at the rear of the Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce complex (Directions and links below.) Please contact us if you are interested in hosting a BUB Hub and thanks to everyone in the community who already make the Blue Urban Bike program work!

Triangle nonprofit gets old bikes rolling again

Original article and broadcast by the local CBS affiliate, WRAL News, 7/21/08

The ReCYCLEry was featured recently on WRAL Channel 5 News and we've already been receiving emails from folks interested in donating bicycles in the Raleigh area. At the current time, we don't have an established drop-off spot besides from our Carrboro location, but we are looking into some possible partnerships. A Durham/Chapel Hill location would be most likely.

However, there is an easy solution! There are a couple of other organizations in the area who have similar missions, and we like to support all such pro-active community organizations:

Award Winning BUB is up! ...not to mention gas prices

It's time to give a 2008 summer update on the Blue Urban Bikes project, our own innovative bike loan effort, brought to fruition by the volunteer efforts of the ReCYCLEry and SURGE. Awards and BUB Hub updates are here.

We can now officially call the program, the "award winning" Blue Urban Bikes. At the "Annual Kick Gas Celebration" held today at Research Triangle Park Headquarters, the Blue Urban Bikes Program was awarded the Go Chapel Hill Community Cycling Award and a shiny new plaque for which we need to find a humble, yet prominent placement.

The luncheon and awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of this year's transportation demand management (TDM) programs, including the Durham County Trip Reduction Ordinance and TDM Programs in RTP, Durham, Orange and Wake Counties. Other recognitions included this year's statistics for the Smart Commute Challenge and recognition of the accomplishments of the region's Best Workplaces for Commuters.

ReCYCLEry Parking Announcement

It is naturally our wish that our guests bicycle to and from the ReCYCLEry, though it is to be expected a fair amount of automobile traffic is inevitable.

As our numbers increase, our current parking situation has become untenable and we request that in the future that nobody park on Daffodil Lane immediately outside of the ReCYCLEry gates. It creates a travel hazard for the residents up the hill and around the curve, not to mention all of our friends and participants.

Therefore we now request that those who must drive please park across South Greensboro Street from the lower end of Old Pittsboro Road. There is a vacant lot in front of the former factory. More details will follow in a future post and on our contact/directions page.

Thanks for your understanding and thanks for making the ReCYCLEry a better place!

Blue Urban Bikes | BUB

A Community Bicycle Loan Program

Blue Urban Bikes (BUB), a community bicycle loan program, is designed to provide a reliable source of clean, green, affordable and sustainable transportation. Our community is ideal for getting around on a bicycle -- when you think about the time it often takes to find a parking space, riding a bike simply takes less time and leaves you feeling strong, able and healthy. The BUB Fleet offers a transportation alternative to citizens so that they may play an active role in lessening the environmental footprint of our community. Nobody suspected in 2006 that gas prices would rise over four dollars per gallon and the economy would crash in 2008; however we did suspect that the BUB program could always dramatically help its users' budgets!
